Pearls are not stones, in case you didn't know.
They are created by oysters in the the sea when a small gadget of nature gets trapped under
their shells. After failed attempts to rid it's private home of the intruder, the oyster
will start producing nacre and coat the item as a home remedy for the discomfort. Over
years of such treatement, a pearl is produced.
Even though pearl jewelry is such a beautiful piece of treasure, sadly it's been associated with
grief and heart break. Many cultures regard this gem as a symbol for tears, such as the mermaid
who lost her love and cried tears of pearls. Nevertheless, this didn't effect its
popularity with the public, so pearls have had a stable part in the wardrobe of
classy, elegant women for centuries.
There are four main types of pearls categorized by geography; Southsea, Tahitian,
Freshwater (Yeah I consider that geography), and Akoya. Each one is different in color, size,
and value. Southsea pearls are the most expensive because of their rareness. Tahitian
pearls are also quite a wallet breaker due to their gorgeous black sheen.
When shopping for pearl jewelry, luster and surface quality are most important, along with the
size and roundness. So if you have a large, round pearl that's very shiney and smooth, you
can go ahead and say "that's a fineeee pearl" with confidence.
