Often dubbed as the ultimate in gemstone world, diamonds have been
cherished and worshipped for
thousands of years. Because it's the hardest mineral found in nature, diamond jewelry became
the holy symbol of everlasting power, wealth, and love.
Even though it's one of the priciest piece of stone one can find in the gem market
today, diamonds are not quite as rare as everyone thinks. It's value has been overblown by social conventions and the De Beers strategic markerters. Being infamous for causing many
wars and massive disputes throughout history, diamond jewelry had, and always will have the entire population of human beings wrapped around their sparkly little fingers.
Shopping for diamond jewelry can be pretty scarey for the inexperienced. But as long as you know about
the 4 C's, you should do just fine. The 4 C's refer to color, carat, cut, and clarity.
The whiter a diamond, the better the color (unless you are in the market for fancy diamonds
which are pink, blue, black, or yellow. But those should be restricted to the experienced
shoppers only). Most diamonds on the market ranges from a color
of G to I. Better colors (F and above) are mostly available through custom requests. Carat
simply means the weight of a diamond. Cut is also important, since it can determine whether
a diamond is worth thousands of dollars or just a few hundred bucks. The better the cut,
the more flare will be displayed. Also, skilled diamond cutters can make a diamond appear
larger than others of the same carat and weight. Clarity is pretty much self explanatory.
Everyone should know that a diamond with a huge black spot or a cloud of brown inclusions
is a major no no.
